Let's start with Calvin Pace. After having a big year as a Arizona Cardinal in 2007, Calvin signed with the Jets. The Jets hoped he would be a special pass rusher for them. He has been good, in 56 games he has 24 sacks. But that is four seasons, and in four seasons the Jets have played 64 games, meaning he has missed 8 games in his four seasons here as a Jet. Last year I think was a good year for him, but at age 31 can he still be a difference maker. Many thought the Jets were going to cut him in the offseason, and then sign an outside linebacker. So far in training camp, the Jets have been using Calvin a lot at defensive end, because they are playing more of a 4-3. I think with the addition of Coples, and Maybin being better than ever, it gives Calvin a lot less pressure.
So is the current outside linebacker position good enough for the Jets. Right now on the roster they have Aaron Maybin, Ricky Sapp, Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, and Marcus Dowtin. I think this group will be good enough for the season. Pace and Thomas can both contribute, Maybin will have a big season, and Sapp and Dowtin have good potential at getting to the passer.
