Brian catching a ball from QB Kirk Cousins
Former Michigan State tight end Brian Linthicum watched the draft at his parent's house, waiting for the phone to ring as the later rounds passed. He got calls from many teams saying they wanted to draft him. Brian really thought the Bucs would take him. The phone never rang for Brian, but was a hot commodity as an un-drafted free agent. The three teams Brian decided between were the Rams, Panthers, and the Jets. He ultimately decided to take his talents to the Big Apple. Last year at Michigan State Linthicum caught 31 passes for 364 yards, pretty good numbers for an un-drafted guy. He is 6'5, and blocks very well, which is a reason Tony probably likes him so much. Brian said this,
This is very interesting considering the other guys who may compete for that job. The Jets have third year guy Jeff Cumberland, who missed pretty much all of last year, but Rex is very high on his athleticism. The Jets also have former rugby star Hayden Smith, who is a physical monster, and it seems is almost guaranteed a spot on the roster. Will the Jets keep four tight ends? Or will they cut one of these guys, presumably Cumberland or Linthicum. This will be something to watch out for once training camp rolls around.
