a lot of Jets fans I've read on twitter feel the same way i do....a lot of fans feel differently. i've read some say that if you can get a few high draft picks and a player, you have to do it. That idea is even more mind boggling to me that the idea of trading him in the first place.
Let's look at some of the reasons trading Revis makes no sense...
1. cONTRACT. rEVIS HAS 1 YEAR LEFT ON THE 4 YEAR 40 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL HE SIGNED 3 YEARS AGO. hE HAS MADE IT CLEAR THAT HE WANTS TO BE THE HIGHEST PAID DEFENSIVE BACK, DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE, which to be fair, he is deserving of. If that's true, rEVIS IS GOING TO WANT MORE THAN THE 95 MILLION DOLLARS MARIO WILLIAMS OF THE BILLS JUST GOT LAST YEAR. Is any team going to trade for Revis, give up a whole bunch of picks and a player or two, and give him that kind of deal? i FIND THAT INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE.
2. INJURY. REVIS TORE HIS ACL IN THE THIRD GAME OF THE SEASON IN MIAMI LAST YEAR. NO ONE HAS ANY CLUE AS TO WHAT LEVEL HE'S GOING TO COME BACK AND PLAY AT. WILL THE SURGERY HAVE TAKEN SOME OF HIS ABILITY AWAY? IT'S POSSIBLE. REVIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GUY THAT HAS RELIED MORE ON TECHNIQUE THAN SPEED TO COVER GUYS, BUT HE STILL NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO RUN WELL IN ORDER TO PLAY THE POSITION. I'VE SEEN PEOPLE SAY "BUT LOOK AT WHAT ADRIAN PETERSON DID..." nO ONE SAW THAT COMING AND YOU SIMPLY CAN'T ASSUME ANYONE WILL COME BACK AND PLAY LIKE THAT COMING OFF OF THIS MAJOR INJURY. ANY TEAM TRADING FOR REVIS WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT KIND OF PLAYER THEY'RE GETTING NOW, WHICH MEANS THEY WOULDN'T GIVE UP AS MUCH. THE JETS CAN NOT GIVE UP REVIS IN ANY SITUATION UNLESS THEY ARE GETTING A MAXIMUM RETURN FOR HIM. YOU CAN'T GIVE HIM AWAY FOR 50 CENTS ON THE DOLLAR.
3. REVIS IS A BRILLIANT PLAYER IN THE PRIME OF HIS CAREER. DO i think the injury will rob him of some of his ability? it's possible. do i think he will still play at an extremely high level for the next few years? I absolutely do. revis is a prideful man who cares deeply about how he plays and how he is perceived in the league. this is a man who was ranked in the top 5 of the 100 best football players in the league last year, and he was the only defensive one. I have no doubts that he will work as hard as he can to get back to the level he played at before the injury. which brings me to my point....
you don't trade great players in the prime of their careers. you keep them. you sign them. you find a way to make it work. shutdown corners in a passing league are almost impossible to come by. while the jets defense didn't suffer too badly when revis was gone for the year, imagine how well they would have played had he stayed healthy. people will scream about the salary cap and you can't pay him that much money....i understand all that. Nonetheless, this man is a great player. he has a chance to be a hall of famer if he continues to play at this high of a level. he will go down as one of the top 3 corners of all time...maybe even the best by the time he's done. you don't trade players like this. you don't!!!!!!!
New G.M. John IDZIK I'M SURE WILL DO ALL THE NECESSARY WORK TO SEE WHAT IS OUT THERE AND I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST THAT. HE SHOULD. THIS TEAM HAS A LOT OF HOLES TO FILL AND EXPLORING EVERY WAY TO FILL THEM IS PART OF HIS JOB. I THINK IDZIK WILL REALIZE HE CAN'T GET A KING'S RANSOM FOR REVIS AND DO THE SMART THING AND KEEP HIM AND WORK A CONTRACT OUT FOR HIM THAT BENEFITS BOTH PARTIES FOR THE LONG TERM.
TO ME, IT WOULD BE A VERY SAD DAY IF dARRELLE REVIS WAS TRADED AWAY BY THE NEW YORK JETS. IT WOULD ALSO BE AN INCREDIBLY POOR DECISION AS WELL.
