Looking at the offensive side of the ball, who are the candidates? A lock if the Jets do go back to having captains is Nick Mangold. Mangold has been with the Jets since 2006, and has been one of the vocal leaders in the clubhouse since. His play on the field does not hurt, as he was selected to another pro-bowl this season. I think there are two more candidates on the offensive side. Eric Decker and D'Brickashaw Ferguson would also be candidates if the Jets named captains. While Decker has only been with the Jets since last season, he is clearly a leader in the locker room. Ferguson is similar to Mangold in his time with the Jets, which is why he would probably get a nod. In Arizona, Bruce Arians only named one captain on offense this past season, so it would be interesting to see if Bowles follows his lead.
On defense things would get very interesting. The first guy you look at is David Harris, however all signs are pointing to him not being a Jet next season. What about Muhammad Wilkerson? He has been with the Jets for a good amount of time and is one of the most talented players on the team. The next candidate would be Demario Davis. He is very vocal even at a young age. My dark horse guy would be Sheldon Richardson. Not only is he the best player on the team ,but even after only two seasons in the NFL is one of the most vocal guys in the locker room.
Most teams in the league select a special teams captain. The Jets have a very viable candidate in Nick Folk. Folk has been with the Jets since 2010, and has been one of the more effective kickers in the NFL over the past few seasons.
If I was Todd Bowles, I would name Nick Mangold, Eric Decker, Sheldon Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson, and Nick Folk as my captains. I think five guys would be a great number and all five of these guys are very deserving.
