Patriots offense vs. Jets Defense
This was a terrible matchup for the jets last year. The pats exploited the jets linebackers inability to cover in space and the jets safeties inability to cover at all. The Patriots used tight ends rob gronkowski and aaron hernandez in all sorts of different roles and abused the jets with them. the jets made a concerted effort in the off season to try and even the playing field here by signing safeties laron landry and yeremiah bell to help cover these two hulking tight ends. bell and Landry were brought in specifically for this game and against these two guys.....they need to earn their money this week.
the pats passing game also added brandon lloyd on the outside to give tom brady the deep threat he didn't have last year. LLoyd can stretch the field a bit, leaving even more space underneath for wes welker to work. welker, who seemed like he was being phased out of the offense early in the year, has picked up his play the last few weeks and has once again become the patriots top weapon. Welker should see a lot of antonio cromartie, who has played at an elite level ever since darrelle revis went down with his acl injury. That's going to leave kyle wilson having to work very hard on lloyd. expect brady to go at him a lot.
aNOTHER CHANGE TO THE PATS OFFENSE THIS YEAR IS THEIR IMPROVEMENT RUNNING THE FOOTBALL. Steven ridley and brandon bolden have been pretty effective when called upon to run the football. the pats offense is now more balanced than it has been over the last few years, which certainly makes it more dangerous.
The bottom line for the Jets defense is this.....Wilson, Bell and Landry all need to play well, but the way they will look best is if the jets can find a way to get a big pass rush this week. Coples and wilkerson showed some life last week. maybin and pace need to come alive as well. get the pass rush and it will make it a lot easier on the secondary to do their job.
