Due to all the off-the-field issues, like high-speed chases and marijuana, people have soured a little on Sheldon Richardson. They can get on him as a person, but Sheldon is amazing as a player. Richardson is one of the NFL's best defensive lineman and is still only 24 years old. The former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has recorded 11.5 sacks, 144 tackles, and 2 forced fumbles in two seasons in the league. The 2013 13th overall pick is super athletic and can line up at tackle and at end. The Jets are getting back their most talented player outside of Darrelle Revis.
2) Revis Island
The Jets defense features the best cornerback in the NFL, Darrelle Revis. He has been worth every penny that the Jets gave him this offseason. In four games, Revis has shut down anyone who has tried to go up against him, whether it be TY Hilton, Andre Johnson, Jordan Matthews, or Jarvis Landry. Revis already has 3 fumble recoveries and 2 interceptions through a quarter of a season. Jets fans may have forgot just how special Darrelle Revis is.
3) The New Calvin Pryor
Todd Bowles has changed the Jets a lot, but he has made Calvin Pryor into a whole new player. The Jets 2014 first round pick looked lost as a rookie, and many started to label him a bust. This season, Todd Bowles has allowed him to play in a more comfortable position as a strong safety and he has flourished. Pryor already has a forced fumble and an interception, and has looked like a beast against the run. By the end of the year, we may look at Pryor as one of the better strong safeties in the NFL.
4) The Rest of the Defensive Line
It is just unfair adding Sheldon Richardson to an already stacked defensive line. How do teams plan on blocking Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson, Leonard Williams, and Damon Harrison? Richardson and Wilkerson are Pro-Bowl players, Damon Harrison is one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL, and Leonard Williams has been one of the best rookies so far this season. The average age of these four defensive lineman is 24.25. With these four rushing and Revis patrolling the secondary, quarterbacks are going to have a tough time against the Jets.
5) The Cornerback Depth
I already wrote about how good Darrelle Revis is, but what about the rest of the corners? The Jets may have the deepest unit of corners in the NFL. Antonio Cromartie was brought back to the Jets this offseason and after a slow start, he looked great in the game in London. Buster Skrine has been amazing thus far in green and white. Playing in the slot, he has shown toughness and great ball skills. He has also shown he can rush the passer. Marcus Williams has stepped up and become a playmaker, with two picks already. Dex McDougle and Darrin Walls are no scrubs either, and this team will get Dee Milliner back at some point.
6) The Ageless David Harris
The most undervalued guy on this defense is David Harris. Now 31 years old, some people have written him off. Harris has had an amazing year so far. The middle linebacker has 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles, and has been a monster in defending the run. Harris was a Jets 2nd round pick all the way back in 2007, and has a been a constant force for all the years.
7) Todd Bowles is Running the Show
Todd Bowles is one of the greatest defensive minds in the game. Last year in Arizona, he led the defense to the top of almost every stat category. So far with the Jets, he appears to be on the same track. With Bowles leading this team, the defense is as good as any.
