Offense: Besides the Qb position the jets have question marks at WR, TE, RB, and at the RG position. At WR the jets have Santonio Holmes on the PUP list or the Physically unable to perform list, Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill are the "Penciled" in starters for tonight's game. After that you have veteran wR Braylon Edwards and Clyde gates who caught some passes last year for the jets. The jets can only win games if these guys step up, kerley needs to play like a percy harvin or a wes Welker which isn't going to happen, and Stephen hill needs to actually catch the ball, he had way too many drops last season. Edwards is most comfortable with Sanchez because Dustin Keller signed a one year deal with the jets rival the Miami Dolphins. At the running back position the jets have a guy who cant follow the law a guy who hasn't gotten his chance and two guys that show promise. Mike goodson the criminal isn't even on the depth Chart so we won't even talk about him. The Starter Bilal Powell played well when shown but doesn't look like a number one guy. Mcnight is the same way but the real guy to watch is Chris Ivory the former Saint. Ivory is great as a pass catcher and will stretch the field something the jets haven't had since Leon Washington. My bet is week one the starter will be Ivory but Powell will get a bunch of carries too. At the TE position I'm shocked that Kellen Winslow isn't the starter but veteran Jeff cumberland gets the nod. Cumberland finally gets what he wanted, to be the starter, only he can blow it from here and Sanchez loves throwing to his TE's so Cumberland has a chance to be a fantasy Sleeper if Sanchez decides to wake up while playing. Finally at the RG position Stephen Peterman is the starter, the previous Detroit Lion is ahead of Vladimir Ducasse the 2nd round Draft pick bust who's been on the jets for the last four seasons. Also on the possible list for playing the RG position is veteran Brain Winters who is simply old and the jets and GM John Idzik are trying to raise younger players to become longtime starters.
On Defense the Jets are looking to bring to the table the same type of defense they did in which they ended got to two straight AFC championship games. With two rookie starters the defense is going to be young all around but it looks like the jets have a chance at a top 15 maybe even a top 10 defense this season. Muhammad Wilkerson is looking to have a breakout season after playing well in the second half of last year. At Dt the jets have Kendrick Ellis who is coming off a rookie season in which he barely played and on the other side Sheldon Richardson the guy who replaces Darrelle Revis without actually replacing him. He was the guy the jets drafted with the draft pick they received from Tampa bay. The question marks on the defense are at the safety and cornerback position. Can Dee Milner Replace Revis; one would hope so, the upside to Milner is that he isn't the number one guy (Cromartie is) and he's only a rookie. The downside is that people are going to expect too much from him. After Yeremiah Bell and LaRon Landry had great seasons with the jets both of them departed and Dawan Landry, Laron's little brother, and second year jet Atonio Allen are the starting safeties. The jets are hoping that they can step up and not give up too much deep passes. The object should be to contain not stop but to contain. Dawan isn't as good as Laron is but the jets are hoping he is just as physical so QB's will be afraid to throw in in the middle. Antonio Allen is a promising player but he is battling a few other players for that spot.
Special Teams: Nick Folk is battling The former Baltimore Raven billy Cundiff who missed that memorable 32 yard field goal against the Patriots in the AFC Championship game and winded up being bullied out of Baltimore. Cundiff could beat our Folk after Folk missed 6 field goals last season. My bet is Folk will stay. At punter you have Robert Malone vs Ryan Quigley. Quigley was a possible Chicago Bear last season before hurting his hip. He had 28 punts inside the 20 yard line in his senior year at Boston College so this could be a battle that is decided the last day of cuts. The kick Returners and Punt Returners will be Joe McKnight and Jeremy Kerley who both had great and awful moments last year.
Coaching: The jets have 13 new coaches including Marty Mornhinweg as the new offensive Coordinator. Mornhinweg who has Vick, Mcnabb, jeff Garcia and others is looking to have an effective running game to make the passing game better. I Expect a more productive offense this season and a defense that gets to the QB a lot more than they did last year. The defense is Rex's again and the offense is based on the QB which won't be decided until before week 4 of the preseason.
What to look for Tonight Vs the Detroit Lions: Sanchez and Smith who will play better. Wilkerson and Couples on the defense, and finally who's the best running back? Powell, Ivory, McNight, or John Griffen. It won't be a big night for good football but it will be interesting to see who's going to make a splash. go Jets!
