WITH THE DRAFT NOW FAST APPROACHING, PEOPLE ARE WONDERING HOW THIS TEAM SHOULD ATTACK THE DRAFT. wHERE SHOULD THEY GO FIRST? WHAT POSITION? WHAT ARE THEIR BIGGEST NEEDS?
LET'S BE HONEST HERE....THIS IS A JETS TEAM WITH A LOT OF HOLES TO FILL. Unless Mark Sanchez gets it turned around this year, they'll need a qb. they don't have much in the backfield right now. outside of santonio holmes, the jets have no real offensive weapons. the offensive line has lost starters like matt slauson. Dustin Keller left for miami. the offense, bad as it was last year, is now in worse shape and needs a major overhaul.
the defense comes back with pretty much the same problem....the jets simply don't have any linebackers who can rush the passer. They haven't had an outside rusher on this team in a long time. They need to fill the safety hole again, as Laron Landry left for indianapolis. as good a defensive coach as rex ryan is, even he needs the players to make his system work.
If I'm Idzik and I have the 9th pick in the draft, here's what I'm doing....
2. avoid the qb in the first round. I wouldn't go near geno smith or matt barkley at 9. i'm not convinced they're going to be players worthy of that pick in the nfl. avoid the qb here.
3. don't set your sights on picking a position. do they need a linebacker to rush the passer? Absolutely. do they have to take that guy with their first pick? absolutely not. if it were me, i'm taking the best player available, whether that be offensive lineman, linebacker, or whatever. You can never go wrong with taking the best player there and making him a part of your team.
I know fans are clamoring for Dion Jordan, or Jarvis Jones to help the pass rush. I'm a believer they can find a Pass rusher later. I think the pick should be Chance Warmack, the massive offensive lineman from Alabama. I know it's not a sexy pick...you don't normally pick guards that early in the draft. nonetheless, he's widely considered the safest and best player in the draft. He's a massive person...a road grater. He mauls his opponents. The jets need to get younger and fill holes on the offensive line. Warmack seems to be the closest thing to a sure thing in the draft. If it were me, that's where I would go.
in the 2nd round, I don't have an issue with taking a shot at qb if Ryan Nassib from Syracuse is there, though i don't think he will be. That's the earliest i'm taking a shot at a qb....if he's not there...again, fill your other needs. the 2014 draft is widely considered to be a much stronger qb draft....the jets can certainly wait til then to go for the franchise qb again if Sanchez fails again this season.
at some point, if i could, i'd take a flyer on marcus lattimore of South CAROLINA. i KNOW HE'S COMING OFF A CATASTROPHIC KNEE INJURY, BUT HE WAS AN EXPLOSIVE PLAYER IN COLLEGE. THE JETS DON'T HAVE ANY OF THEM. 3RD-4TH ROUND...IT'S WORTH THE RISK. WILLIS MCGAHEE HAD THAT KIND OF HORRIFIC INJURY IN COLLEGE AND HE'S HAD HIMSELF A PRETTY GOOD NFL CAREER SINCE.
IT'S AN IMPORTANT DRAFT FOR THE JETS BECAUSE THEY ARE REBUILDING. They need to make sure they hit on a lot of guys here and have them be important parts of this team in the next few years. Idzik needs to fill holes, but he needs to more importantly get talent on this team, no matter where it is. this is a jets team right now that is in the bottom of the league talent wise. any kind of talent brought aboard would help them.
it's john idzik's first draft. we can only hope it's not too big for him.
