Let's start with the remainder of free agency. I would like to see the Jets add some cap room by cutting guys like Calvin Pace, Jason Babin, and Jeff Cumberland. Next I think the Jets need to patch up things at the safety, outside linebacker, quarterback, running back, and on the offensive line. They don't have to fill all of these spots in free agency. Safety is the spot to upgrade in free agency. The draft class is weak and guys like Rahim Moore or Marcus Gilchrist could really help this secondary next season. Signing one of these two and putting them next to Pryor would be nice. A veteran quarterback to backup/compete with Geno Smith is also needed. I suspect the Jets will make a push for Ryan Fitzpatrick once Houston releases him. He has a solid veteran who had his best seasons with Chan Gailey in Buffalo. At some point the Jets should look to lock up star Muhammad Wilkerson. It is huge that they do it before the season.
Let's say they say Gilchrist, Fitzpatrick, and are the entering the draft. What should they do at six? For me, I think the pick should would have to be either Dante Fowler Jr or Vic Beasley. Both have the potential to be All-Pro players at the outside linebacker spot. This is a huge need for the Jets as they really only have Quinton Coples. Adding one of these rookies, makes the defense outstanding. I understand the case for Marcus Mariota, but if the Jets are going to win they need to build an elite defense, and choose the stud over the question mark in Mariota. Beside Fowler/Beasley, the Jets should add a running back in the mid-rounds, along with some offensive line help, and maybe a wide receiver. Let's say second round they go with a guy like TJ Clemmings or DJ Humphries. Both could be studs down the road and start day one at guard. Then in round three you attack running back, I'll take David Cobb out of Minnesota. He is a savvy back who can do a lot.
So to recap, in free agency the Jets would be adding Darrelle Revis, Buster Skrine, James Carpenter, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Marcus Gilchrist, while also trading for Brandon Marshall. They also resigned Harris and Powell. In my dream draft they get Dante Fowler/Vic Beasley round one, TJ Clemmings/DJ Humphries, and David Cobb round three. These steps would lead the Jets to becoming playoff contenders. If Geno can improve under Chan Gailey with this team, watch out.
