With the injury to Mark Sanchez, it opened the door for rookie Geno Smith to start week one. Geno was the second round pick of the Jets this season, and is being hyped after a great career at West Virginia. John Idzik is all in on Geno, Marty Mornhinweg is all in on Geno, and not it seems Rex Ryan is all in on Geno. The Jets gave Mark Sanchez four seasons to prove himself, and they will give Geno at least all of this season. The Jets fans and front office want to see a fresh face behind center.
2) Will Be Cut Eventually
It could happen at any time, but I think it happens after this season. If the Jets cut Sanchez now, they would take an 8.5 million dollar cap hit, something I don't think they want to do. If they see it is in the best interest in the team, I think they may do it. Sanchez's contracts was the biggest mistake of Mike tannenbaum's time with the Jets, and after this season the Jets will be out of it. Even if Geno struggles, Sanchez won't get his chance with the Jets next season, because he will be cut.
3) Rex's Job Depends On This Season
If the Jets have a bad season, Rex Ryan will be fired. Don't you think Rex wants to win then? I think the Jets think Geno gives them the best chance to win, so that's who Rex will be on board with. Rex has watched the Sanchez show over the last few seasons, the interceptions, the buttfumble. If Rex wants to keep his job, he can't send Sanchez out on the field.
4) Shoulder May Be worse than we thought
The reason Geno is getting the nod is because of Sanchez's shoulder injury, which originally only appeared to be a day to day bone bruise. Now sources are saying this could be an injury that lasts for weeks, as that is backed up by the Jets signing of Brady Quinn. By the time he is healed, the Jets will have moved on.
