Week 4 Start/Sit for Jets Fantasy Football Players

Chris Ivory- Start
I know how good the Lions rushing defense is, second only behind the Jets, but I think Ivory gets a lot of touches and has a solid game. Ivory had a great game against the Bears, but the Jets kept handing the ball back to Chris Johnson. This week Jets coaches Rex Ryan and Marty Mornhinweg recognized the fact they need to and will give Ivory more carries. I think if the Jets get down to the goal line this week, they will take the pressure off Geno and give the rock to Ivory. Ivory is a solid flex player and a decent running back two if you are hurt by bye-weeks.

Eric Decker- Sit
The Lions passing defense has done a pretty good job of containing big time receivers such as Jordy Nelson, Victor Cruz, and Kelvin Benjamin so far this season. Decker has been fighting a hamstring the past couple of weeks, an injury which held him to only a couple of series against Chicago. I would wait and make sure Decker can make it through an entire game before giving him a fantasy start.

Film Breakdown On How the Jets Can Disrupt the Lions Offense

Red Zone Defense
This first play is for the Jets red zone defense. Last week against the Bears the defense was shaking inside the twenty. This week they go up against one of the best red zone targets in football, Calvin Johnson.  On this play, the Packers only bring a four man rush. The corner plays up against Johnson at the LOS, but then lets him run behind him because of safety help. The cornerback can get back on the lob ball and can also tackle Reggie Bush if it is dumped off to him. On this play, Stafford does not release the ball and gets strip sacked by Julius Peppers. He was looking Johnson the whole way, but the almost triple-coverage would not give Johnson any open space.

Make Him Move Out of the Pocket
On this play late in the first quarter, Matthew Stafford was intercepted by Packers rookie, HaHa Clinton-Dix. The key to this play for Green Bay is the interior pressure by the defensive lineman. This flushed Stafford out of the pocket and forced him to throw on the run and make an errant throw for a turnover. The Jets will need constant pressure up the middle from guys like Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson to make Stafford use his legs.

Stopping the Deep Ball
A big issue the Jets may face is their young corners stopping the deep ball to Calvin Johnson. On this play, the cornerback plays off at the LOS. He appears to be in one on one coverage running down the field. Once Stafford unloads the deep ball, the free safety comes over and helps on the coverage. The safety running over stops Johnson and allows an interception for Green Bay. The Jets cannot leave their corners one on one on Calvin.

Please Marty, Stop With the Vick Packages

Back in 2012, the Jets had a high-profile backup quarterback named Tim Tebow. From time to time, the Jets would put Tebow in at quarterback and run a couple plays. This decision to put Tebow in was regretted by the Jets, as he was ineffective and killed Mark Sanchez's flow. This season the Jets have Michael Vick as their backup quarterback, and have a put him in for at least a play in each of the first two games of the seasons. Marty Mornhinweg seems to want to use him as a decoy, who can either run or pass. None of the plays Vick has been in for have done much. For Geno Smith and the Jets offenses' sake, the Jets need to stop with the silly Michael Vick stuff.

On Sunday in Green Bay with about eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Jets were down 31-24 and had the ball. It was 2nd and 13 and the Jets decided to put Michael Vick in the game at quarterback. He took the snap and ran left, he searched and searched and was eventually sacked by Clay Matthews. It was a very unproductive play and put the Jets in a 3rd and 16 situation in a critical spot in the ball game. Taking out Geno Smith at various points of the game could end up hurting him. Geno needs to find a rhythm and being subbed out won't help.

Thinking in the long-term, the Michael Vick package is not smart. If Vick comes in, scrambles and gets hurt, the Jets lose their insurance plan for Geno Smith. Vick is their only quarterback option with real NFL experience. Vick is an injury prone player, who should be in a game unless Geno Smith gets hurt.

Now I understand Marty Mornhinweg and Vick's relationship. Marty was his offensive coordinator in Philadelphia for a while and understands how talented Vick is. Having said that, it is time for the Vick stuff to stop.

Three Goats From Jets Rough Loss to Packers

1) Sheldon Richardson/Marty Mornhinweg
Whether it was Richardson or Marty, it does not matter. The Jets should not of been wasting their final timeout right before the snap of their fourth down play with five minutes to go down seven. Geno Smith connected with Kerley for a touchdown, but it was waved off due to someone on the Jets sideline calling for time. Clearly it wasn't Rex, and on the video you can see Marty yelling for it. Sheldon Richardson leans into the refs ear and gets the timeout. This play really cost the Jets the game, because it would of been 31-31 had the timeout not waved off the play. Also burning the last timeout was critical when the Packers got the ball back.

2) Muhammad Wilkerson
Muhammad Wilkerson is supposed to be the anchor and leader of the Jets defense. A leader should not be ejected from a game in the second half of a tight football game for throwing punches after getting scored on. After he was ejected, Wilkerson went back to the locker room laughing and smiling as the crowd showered him with boos. Wilkerson has to step up and next week and have a big game.

3) The Secondary
The storyline coming into this season was if the Jets secondary could hold up. The secondary was pretty solid in the first half, but melted in the second. Aaron Rodgers started to toast them, as Jordy Nelson finished with a career high with over 200 receiving yards including an 80 yard touchdown where he burned Dee Milliner and made Calvin Pryor miss. Randall Cobb also had two touchdowns. Antonio Allen and Darrin Walls were overmatched by Packer wideouts.

Three Stars From Jets Win Over Raiders

1) Chris Johnson/Chris Ivory
The Jets knew coming into the season that they have a great group of running backs that can win them a lot of games this season. Chris Johnson in his Jets debut showed us that vintage speed with 68 yards rushing on 13 carries and 5 catches (one for a touchdown). Chris Ivory also had a tremendous day. Ivory finished with 102 yards rushing on 10 carries, including the biggest play of the game, a 71 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. This two were fun to watch and should be all season if they can stay healthy.

2) Geno Smith
After a couple of early mistakes that including an interception and a fumble, Geno Smith settled in an had a terrific first game of the year. He finished the afternoon 23/28, with 221 yards in the air with a touchdown. Smith also used his legs well, rushing for over 40 yards. Geno spread the wealth to a lot of different targets, connecting with seven different teammates. I liked what I saw from Geno and hope to see him build off this game.

3) The Run D
Earlier this week, Raiders offensive lineman Austin Howard said the Jets can be "pushed around". I don't think that is true, as the Raiders finished with 25 yards rushing on the entire day. Maurice Jones-Drew finished with 11 yards on the ground, as the Jets front dominated. A bunch of different guys were contributing for the Jets on run defense including safety Calvin Pryor and Quinton Coples.

Crucial Matchup's to Watch Week One Against the Raiders

  • James Jones vs. Darrin Walls
Most likely, the Jets will be without Dee Milliner on Sunday, making Darrin Walls the number guy at cornerback. The Raiders top receiver is former Packer, James Jones. Jones caught 59 passes last year for Green Bay a year ago and should be targeted heavily by Derek Carr. Can Walls contain Jones in man coverage?

  • Derek Carr vs. Rex Ryan                                                                                                                                                      A big key to this game will be whether Rex Ryan can rattle rookie quarterback Derek Carr. Rex's defense is known for crazy blitz's, something that can easily rattle a rookie quarterback playing in their first NFL game. Carr won the job over Matt Schaub after a great preseason. Will Rex's plan rattle Carr enough to make up for the secondary issues?

  •  Jets Offensive Line vs. Talented Raiders Front
The Raiders went out in the offseason after losing defensive end Lamarr Houston and signed a bunch of veteran pass-rushers. They signed Justin Tuck, Lamarr Woodley, Antonio Smith, and drafted stud outside backer Khalil Mack. Second year quarterback Geno Smith needs his offensive line to give him time in the pocket and stop the Raiders rush. It will be interesting to see Willie Colon coming off an injury against this front.
