AFC East Top Five: Offensive Lineman

5) Nick Mangold, C, New York Jets
Nick Mangold is getting up there in age, but he is still one of the best centers in the national football league. The 30 year old is a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro player. Since his career began in 2006, Mangold has only missed two games and was a starter from day one. Mangold is a terrific leader and a solid player against both the run and the pass. Mangold is maybe the most important Jet player, as their entire offense would break down if he was not out there.

4) Sebastian Vollmer, T, New England Patriots
Vollmer is a monster standing at 6'8 and weighing 320 pounds. The 29 year old former second round pick has established himself as one of the best tackles in football as he rarely gives up a sack. In 2010 in sixteen games for the Patriots, Vollmer only allowed one sack. Vollmer has had some injury issues over his career, one including this season when his year was cut short with a bad leg injury. Vollmer made the second team All-Pro back in 2010, but has somehow never made it to the Pro Bowl.

AFC East Top Five: Tight Ends

5. Scott Chandler, Buffalo Bills
Chandler is a big tight end that can block as well as being threat in the passing game. His stats were not that impressive last season, recording only two touchdowns, but injuries across the board on offense setback his production. However, he is a big piece in that offense, expect to see a large increase in yardage for him next season with Sammy Watkins drawing more attention from opposing defenses.

4. Jeff Cumberland, New York Jets
Jeff Cumberland had a breakout year in 2013 and was one of Geno Smith's primary targets. He excels in blocking and has shown impressive athleticism. He was most dangerous in the redzone where he caught four touchdowns. The same results can be expected from Jeff Cumberland, even with a new look offense.

AFC East Top Five: Wide Receivers

5. Danny Amendola, New England Patriots.
For a large chunk of the 2013 season, Danny Amendola was sidelined with injuries, but when on the field he caught 54 balls for a total of 633 on 83 targets. Amendola was brought in originally to replace Wes Welker in the slot and he has the ability to do that with Tom Brady slinging him balls. The question, is whether or not he can stay on the field, and if Amendola can do that he will see a significant increase in production in 2014, easily eclipsing his career high of 689 yards in a 16 game season.

4. Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills.
Straight out of Clemson, Sammy Watkins is a future star in the National Football League. To secure Watkins, the Bills jumped up to the 4th pick overall in the draft. Watkins has no dearth of talent and completely blew it up at Clemson in 2013 for almost 1,500 yards. With the right quarterback, whether EJ Manuel or Thad Lewis, the Bills star will have no problem transitioning the the NFL. Expect to see him up there with Dez and Brandon Marshall in a few seasons.

Who Will Step Up With Willie Colon Sidelined?

5/28/2014

PictureDakota Dozier
One of John Idzik's first signings as Jets general manager last year was guard Willie Colon. Colon a veteran started sixteen games for the Jets in 2013 and brought toughness, experience, and leadership to the Jets locker room. Colon had bicep surgery right after the season and now is having a knee procedure that may keep him out for training camp. While Colon will still most likely be starting at guard for the Jets week one even with this injury, now could be the time for a young guard on the team to step up with the more reps they will receive. Colon has had injury concerns in the past, meaning one of the guys who is a presumed backup may need to step into a starting role.

At OTA's today, second year offensive lineman Oday Aboushi took first team snaps in Colon's place. Aboushi was a fifth round pick last season out of Virginia and can play both guard and tackle. He did not see any game action a season ago meaning he has no real NFL experience. The Jets kept him on the roster the entire season, meaning they think he has potential. Along with Aboushi, they kept rookie guard Will Campbell on the roster the entire season out of Michigan. It will be interesting to see how he has progressed.

Another guy to keep an eye on is rookie Dakota Dozier. Dozier was a fourth round pick for the Jets out of Furman as a tackle, but many see him swinging inside to guard. Dozier is very polished and may have been hurt by playing at such a small school.  People call him the "Bull Dozier" because of how physical he is.

Three Jets Who Were Sent a Message During the Draft

5/20/2014

1) Kyle Wilson, CB
In the first round back in 2010, the Jets spent a first round pick on Kyle Wilson out of Boise State. Wilson in his first few seasons in the NFL has shown he can really only make an impact as a slot cornerback and has been a very major disappointment. In four seasons, Wilson only has three interceptions. The Jets spent a third and a sixth round pick on a corner in this year's draft. The Jets also acquired cornerbacks Dimitri Patterson and Johnny Patrick during the offseason. Wilson could be in for a major drop on the depth chart this season if he makes the team.

Picture
2) Stephen Hill, WR
Another draft disappointment for the Jets was Stephen Hill, a second round pick  back in 2012. Hill showed a lot of potential with a 6'4 frame and 4.4 speed. Hill has battled injuries in his first two season and has struggled on the field as well. Hill's best season was one with only 24 catches.  During the draft the Jets added three receivers, Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans, and Quincey Enunwa. Also in free agency the Jets added Jacoby Ford and Eric Decker. If Hill disappoints in training camp, his roster spot is in jeopardy.

Picture
3) Geno Smith, QB
While Geno's playing time was not damaged like the others on this list, the Jets sent him a message. Last season Geno was very inconsistent, but had limited weapons in Jeremy Kerley, Jeff Cumberland, and injured receivers Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill. The Jets have stacked up on weapons, especially in the draft, adding big tight end Jace Amaro, Shaq Evans, Jalen Saunders, and Quincey Enunwa. The Jets are leaving Geno with no more reasons to not succeed at quarterback for the Jets in 2014.

Jets Claim Former Rams Running Back Daryl Richardson

In surprising news, it was announced the Jets were rewarded former Rams running back Daryl Richardson of of waivers today. Richardson was a seventh round pick of the Rams back in 2012 and in 24 games the past two seasons has rushed for 690 yards. During his rookie season he was the backup to Stephen Jackson and in 2013 was actually the starter for the Rams at running back week one. Now the Rams are loaded at running back with Stacey, Mason, and Benny Cunningham. In order to make room for Richardson, it looks as if the Jets have let go of running back Alex Green. Right now the Jets have Chris Ivory, Chris Johnson, Bilal Powell, and Mike Goodson at running back on the roster.

I like the move by the Jets. Richardson is a guy with speed, running a 4.47 when he game for the draft back in 2012. Mike Goodson is a question mark and I don't think he will be on the roster with all the off the field issues. The Richardson pickup just to adds to the notion that he won't be here for much longer. The Jets have a nice running back core in place, but Ivory and Johnson are both injury risks and having an established backup option with Bilal Powell would be good for the Jets. I think with all of his talent and if he shows he is healthy, Richardson will make the Jets week one team. Hey don't forget, he will make three quarters of the Jets backfield feature dreadlocks.

Who is the Best Option to Start Across From Dee Milliner at Cornerback for the Jets?

5/15/2014

PictureJets cornerbacks Dee Milliner and Ellis Lankster
The Jets came into the offseason expecting to address the cornerback position in a big way, as they had interest in corners like Vontae Davis and Alterraun Verner. The Jets didn't do much, bringing in veteran Dimitri Patterson and drafting two guys in rounds three and six. Also on the roster are guys like Ellis Lankster, Darrin Walls, Johnny Patrick, and Kyle Wilson.  We know former 9th overall pick Dee Milliner will start, but who will start with him? Rex Ryan said today on WFAN that he expects Patterson to be the starter.  Here are the current candidates and who we think should start on week one:

Dimitri Patterson
After missing out on the top cornerbacks of the market, the Jets settled for veteran Dimitri Patterson. The 30 year old played the last two seasons for the Dolphins and recorded 4 interceptions in six games in 2013 before suffering a season ending injury. Patterson is the early favorite and the safe choice for the Jets to start.

Darrin Walls
After going un-drafted and playing a year with the Falcons, Walls has been in the Jets organization since 2012. Walls split time as a starter and a guy off the bench for the Jets while Dee Milliner was struggling in 2013. Walls has good size at 6'0 and speed at a 4.43 forty with room to grow at the age of 25.
