Jets sign third round pick DeMario Davis

At OTA's Rex has fallen in love with Davis
We have recently learned that the Jets agreed to terms on a deal with third round pick, linebacker DeMario Davis. The deal is four years, but we do not know the money that he will be getting. Rex took him at the 77th overall selection out of Arkansas State. Davis's leaderships reminds Rex Ryan of a young Ray Lewis, a great compliment for anyone.

Davis has great speed, as he ran a 4.5 40 yard dash, and is 6'2 which is a good size. At OTA's he has worked in the first team sub defense, and could get a lot of time on the field this year. With his athletic ability and leadership, this guy could turn out to be the steal of the Jets draft.  This leaves the Jets with one unsigned rookie, wide receiver Jordan White.

Kyle Wilson's Impact on the Jets Defense

Kyle Wilson cornerback for the Jets is entering his third season out of Boise State as the Jets third cornerback. On a good day Revis and Cromartie are locking down the two best receivers, and with the acquisitions of safeties Yeremiah Bell and LaRon Landry what role does Wilson play? He's played in all 32 games has 62 tackles and 2 interceptions. He isn't a pass rusher, we think, and he isn't a safety type of cornerback, so where does he fit. Besides covering the third best receiver he could fill in the second best receiver and Cromartie can go number one and Revis can rush the quarterback or Cromartie can rush the QB. Wilson will be used a lot of different way and no matter where he is someone on the Jets team will benefit from where he plays.

Which Holmes will show up this season?

Over his Jets career Santonio Holmes has gone from Sanchez's savior to a castaway. In four more games than his first Jet season Holmes had one less catch, and in the last game got in a fight with Wayne Hunter. Holmes was upset over not getting the ball, and was not the big play guy the Jets needed. He has done other stupid things over his career, with the whole drugs thing. We all know what he can do though. He is still only 28 years old and over his 6 years in the NFL he has caught 338 balls and has scored 34 touchdowns.  He had one of the best catches in NFL history to help the Steelers beat the Cardinals in the Super Bowl. Another big question is whether he and Mark Sanchez can gel? The first year with the two they seemed to be best friends, but with losing in the second year, came some sparks. The two have said they worked it out, and on twitter Mark asked Holmes to be his valentine. Here a few reasons why I think he will have a big year. The first reason is because of Stephen Hill. Last year he did not have another wide out who could stretch the field and make big open field plays. Hill is that guy, and will make the defenses think twice about doubling or tripling Holmes like they did a season ago. The next reason is because it will be the first time him and Mark really have a lot of time to work together. His first season as a Jet, he was suspended for the first four games. Last year there was a lockout, so less time for the players to get comfortable with each other. A third reason I believe he will have a big year is because of Tony Sparano. Sparano loves to throw the ball down the field, and Holmes will be his guy. So which Santonio will show up this year, the frustrated guy at the end of last year? Or will it be the big play guy we know and love?

Jets sign two Tackles; Hard Knocks finds it's team

Willis while with the Seahawks
On May 10th Jets right tackle Wayne Hunter said,
"I am the starting right tackle, that’s it. Not up for debate. Whatever happens come opening day, I am the starting right tackle. They told me that, so it’s clear to me. It’s as simple as that."
He believes that, but do the Jets? Today the Jets signed two right tackles, Stephon Heyer and Ray Willis. Heyer was an undrafted free agent and signed with the Redskins in 2007. He played for the Redskins until 2010, when he signed with Oakland last season. The other guy, Willis, was drafted out of Florida State in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL draft by the Seahawks. He played there until 2010, when he signed with the Dolphins but was cut, then signed by the Saints. The two guys have 61 NFL starts between them.
Jared's take: With 61 NFL starts between them, I don't think this was a move to bring in practice squad guys. I think these guys will compete with Wayne Hunter for that starting right tackle position. Wayne really has to do better if he wants to keep his job. The Jets roster is now full at 90.

How Good Will Sanchez be?

Will we see a more improved Sanchez?
Mark Sanchez has had his ups and downs. In three seasons as the Jets starter he has had a completion percentage of 55.3 which has been one of the worst over the last 3 years for qualified players. He has thrown for 9,209 yards which isn't bad. He's thrown 55 touchdowns again not bad. But he also threw 51 interceptions in 3 seasons which is bad and fumbled the ball 17 times. So he has had more turnovers then touchdowns in his career, but brought the Jets to two straight AFC championship games. Sanchez is the type of player that you hope for the best but you don't know what your going to get. Going into his fourth season has a starting quarterback in the NFL, and having the best backup QB of all time who is more wanted then you, he is going to have to prove that he is better then Tebow and that he belongs in New York until his career is over.

Who will win the kicking competition?

5/28/2012

Earlier this offseason the Jets signed former Rams kicker Josh Brown. Brown is 33 years old and has been very consistent with the Rams over the years. Over his career he has made 80.7 percent of his kicks and last season went 21 for 28 on field goals. A couple years ago he was considered an elite kicker. The other kicker is Nick Folk. Folk is coming into his third season as a Jet and his 5th year in the NFL. He is 27 years old and has made 77.9 percent of his kicks. Last season for the Jets he went 19 for 25 with a long of 51 yards. In his two seasons as a Jet he has come up clutch at times. Games against the Colts and Cowboys were examples of his clutchness. At other times he missed some easy field goals. So who should be the starting kicker? We will see over training camp and the preseason. I think they should go with Brown, and
not Folk up the kicking job.

Sanchez sharper than Tebow in OTA's

For the first time in Mark Sanchez's career he will have to deal with some adversity with Tebow right on his back. With all of this new pressure, Mark looked sharp while Tebow did not. People are saying that Mark's arm looks stronger than ever, and at one point threw an 80 yard bomb to Stephen Hill. Hill ran right past Kyle Wilson and Sanchez hit him deep. Tebow on the other hand struggled. In one span of three passes in 7 on 7 he threw two interceptions, one to Bart Scott and one to Yeremiah Bell. It is still very early and there was no pass rush coming at them, so we will have to really wait until later in the summer for this "competition" to get going.

Last Chance for Jets to get a Ring

The Jets Can't Fall this year
The Jets who drafted Mark Sanchez in 2009 made the playoffs in his rookie and sophomore seasons and who missed the playoffs in his Junior season are now in his senior season. The Jets having a plethora of offensive weapons around Sanchez wether it was Coles, Cotchery, Thomas Jones, LT, Plax, Holmes, Keller, Brad Smith, Shonne Greene, and even offensive linemen like Damion Woody. The Jets aging by the minute are facing the "Celtics" syndrome this season. This is a term I like to use when aging teams that are good are in there last seasons to win a championship. The average age for the Jets roster going into training camp is 25 which is young but the average age for the Jets projected week 1 roster is 29 years old. Although that may seems young, its not. The elder guys on the Jets are in important positions, like linemen on both sides, and you can also make an argument that players like Harris, Holmes, and Landry are aging even though they are young they have been playing for so long that their football lives are getting older. I think if the jets don't make the playoffs this year, there will be changes in the front office, at the head coach position, at the quarterback position and at many other positions on the field.
