Focusing on tonight though, there are some things us Jets fans would like to see this team accomplish. With the way they have played the first two weeks in the preseason, there are undoubtedly things this team has needed to work on and tonight is the night for them to show some improvement.
1. There is no question the person under the biggest spotlight tonight is going to be Austin Howard. Howard replaces the benched Wayne Hunter and needs to give Jets fans and coaches some kind of hope that he can protect the qb. Hunter was abysmal and right tackle and was deservedly benched. Howard is an undrafted free agent, signed from the Ravens practice squad last year. He doesn't exactly have the pedigree you're looking for that says you're getting a great tackle. Having said that, he gets the first shot here to show what he can do. He should be able to pass block better than Hunter (Let's be serious...who can't?), but we really need to see him moving people off the line in the run game as well. In this offense, that's just as important.
2. The rest of the offense needs to come together. It looks as if Santonio Holmes is going to give it a go tonight and the Jets need to find a way to get him involved. The offense has been completely stagnant the last two weeks and has not given fans any kind of reason to think this offense will be any different than the one that struggled so badly at the end of last year. Mark Sanchez and the first team offense need a few drives here, and some points on the board to get the fans and the media off their back. Personally, I'd like to see something DOWN THE FIELD....just take a shot. Then again, the beleaguered offensive line needs to block long enough to give Sanchez a shot to get the ball down the field.
