As a jets fan, the entire ordeal with revis disturbs me. The fact mike tannenbaum was never able to get revis signed to a legitimately good long term deal really put the jets in this situation. it is one of the reasons mr. t no longer has a job in this organization. letting revis get to this point was a huge mistake. john idzik did the best he could with this situation, and while i am not at all thrilled with the compensation they got for a player of revis' skill level, i do know that getting something is better than nothing.
having said that, the bottom line with this whole situation is this.....it falls squarely on the shoulders of woody johnson. johnson was adamant he was not going to pay revis like the top player he is. Woody took it personally the last few times revis held out and everytime he threatened to hold out and this is his way of handling the business. Instead of finding a constructive way of dealing with revis and coming to terms on a long term deal, woody decides to just get rid of him. i simply can't believe there wasn't a way to figure out how to keep revis and make both the jets and revis happy at the same time. I've been a fan of Woody Johnson as an owner.....the jets have known more success under his leadership than under most other owners in their history. Having said that, This was a bonehead decision. It's the kind of decision that makes it look as if he simply doesn't care about winning. He wanted it done his way here and when revis wouldn't do it that way, he shipped him off. It's really the first time in Johnson's ownership that i'm completely disgusted by him.
the compensation they got for him? a first rounder this year and a probable third rounder next year? pathetic. i understand tampa was really their only suitor, but this is a pittance of value. the jets traded revis for 30 cents on the dollar. idzik was under orders to deal him and this is the best he could get. i understand that. I just despise it. You traded a hall of fame caliber player for two guys that are almost guaranteed to be half the player Revis is. Just an awful job. the jets handled this terribly from day one and this is what they end up with.
to make matters worse, Revis gets NO GUARANTEED MONEY FROM TAMPA. NONE!!! ZIPPO!!! YOU'RE TELLING ME THE JETS COULDN'T FIND A WAY TO GUARANTEE SOME MONEY AND FIND A CONTRACT THAT WORKS??? COME ON. IT'S REALLY A DISGRACE.
REVIS IS ONE OF THE GREAT PLAYERS I'VE EVER SEEN. HE PLAYS HIS POSITION AS WELL AS ANYONE PLAYS ANY OTHER POSITION IN ALL OF SPORTS. THE JETS HAD A CHANCE TO KEEP THIS GUY AND HAVE HIM BE A PART OF THEIR FRANCHISE FOR YEARS TO COME. THE FANS WOULD HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO SEE A STAR CORNERBACK PLAY HIS BEST YEARS HERE IN NEW YORK. HE WOULD HAVE GONE TO THE HALL OF FAME AS A JET AND BEEN PART OF THE FRANCHISE I'M SURE FOR YEARS AFTER THAT. INSTEAD, TAMPA BAY NOW GETS THIS PRIVILEGE. tHERE'S NO QUESTION THAT THEY ARE BETTER OFF BECAUSE OF IT TOO.
