No surprises at this position. I think we see the end of the Matt Simms era with the use of a fourth round pick on Bryce Petty. The only question is who will start, Geno Smith or Ryan Fitzpatrick? Right now I think the advantage belongs to Geno, who with Chan Gailey and improved weapons could be in for an improved season.
Running Backs- Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Zac Stacy, Tommy Bohanon (Ridley starts the year on PUP)
The Jets didn't draft any running backs, but they have a ton of depth at the position after signing Stevan Ridley and trading for Zac Stacy. I think Ridley is a better play than Stacy, but coming off the torn ACL, I think we see Ridley start the season on the PUP list. Bohanon is the only fullback currently on the roster.
Wide Receivers- Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, Devin Smith, DeVier Posey, TJ Graham
The top four spots on the receiver depth chart are locked up by Marshall, Decker, Kerley, and Smith, The question remains out of guys like Posey, Graham, Enunwa, Evans, and Owosu, who gets the last one or two spots? I think due to Chan Gailey's experience with TJ Graham, he gets a spot. And, I think after trading for him in the draft, Posey gets a spot.
Tight Ends- Jace Amaro, Kellen Davis, Jeff Cumberland, Zach Sudfeld
The only change to the position over the offseason was the addition of blocking tight end Kellen Davis. Jace and Jeff Cumberland should play roles on offense, and Sudfeld is very active on special teams. I just hope that Amaro sees more snaps than Cumberland this season.
Offensive Line- D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Oday Aboushi, Nick Mangold, James Carpenter, Breno Giacomini, Dakota Dozier, James Brewer, Jarvis Harrison, Corey Hilliard, Dalton Freeman
The offensive line position is going to be a tough position to make cuts at for the Jets. As of now, I would say Ferguson, Aboushi, Mangold, Carpenter, and Giacomini are the starters. I think Dozier and Harrison make it for their youth and long-term potential. Dalton Freeman is a solid backup center. Corey Hilliard is a veteran who can play the tackle positions, and Brewer is a tough veteran guard. In this situation, Brian Winters and Willie Colon would be getting cut.
This unit is special. Wilkerson, Richardson, Harrison, and Williams, will be on the field almost every play disrupting opposing offenses. It will be interesting to see how the Jets play out the Muhammad Wilkerson contract situation. I think Kevin Vickerson gets the backup tackle job over TJ Barnes, and I think Douzable gets the backup end job over a guy like Stephen Bown. Look for Deon Simon to be a part of the practice squad.
Linebackers- David Harris, Demario Davis, Calvin Pace, Lorenzo Mauldin, Erin Henderson, Jamari Lattimore, IK Enemkpali
Last season, middle linebacker depth was an issue for the Jets. They added Erin Henderson and Jamari Lattimore, who are both very solid backups. Lattimore should play a key role on special teams. One of Calvin Pace and Jason Babin should be gone, and I think it ends up being Babin. IK showed flashes of being a good situational pass-rusher a season ago, and should also be a member of the special teams unit.
Cornerbacks- Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, Dee Milliner, Darrin Walls, Dexter McDougle
What a difference a year makes. Last season the corners were Darrin Walls and Marcus Williams. Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, and Dee Milliner are all probably going to make this roster. The final battle will be between guys like Darrin Walls, Dexter McDougle, Marcus Williams, and Keith Lewis, for those final couple spots. Walls has been very reliable in his seasons with the Jets. McDougle was a third rounder a year ago, and showed flashes in training camp last year.
Safeties- Calvin Pryor, Marcus Gilchrist, Antonio Allen, Jaiquawn Jarrett
If Calvin Pryor develops, I think this unit can be very good. They signed Marcus Gilchrist to a long-term deal, and he will start at free-safety. Antonio Allen has showed in the past that he is a better safety than he is a corner, and should backup Gilchrist. Jaiquawn Jarrett has past ties to Todd Bowles and should be backing up Pryor.
Special Teams- Nick Folk, Ryan Quigley, Tanner Purdum
