Congrats on getting the general manager job for the Jets! Our last GM didn't do to well, if you don't know that already. Hopefully within the next two years you won't see banners flying around practice that say "Fire Maccagnan". I have to say, I love your first couple of moves. Todd Bowles was a great hire for the Jets,a smart, tough, coach that players seem to love. The second move you made really made you loved though. Firing Terry Bradway was similar to the day Jim Dolan fired Isiah Thomas with the Knicks. That's how bad he was. Not many guys get demoted from being a GM and are still with the team almost a decade later. One of the positives to come out of this, is that the guys at the Daily News can stop writing articles about how much Bradway wanted Russell Wilson. If Wilson was a bust, would he still have leaked this to the media?
You got the ball moving in a good direction, and I would like to see it continue. Your first big test will come around the time free-agency comes, when we can resign our own or try and add some pieces. Please, please, please, extend Muhammad Wilkerson. The guy is an All-Pro caliber player and a terrific leader in the clubhouse. I think a deal worth about 12 million a year sounds very fair for big Mo. Let's say 5 years, 60 million? After this let some of the dead weight go. Let David Harris hit the open market, if Buffalo does not break the bank for him, resign him for dirt cheap. Let Michael Vick, Dawan Landry, Willie Colon, Kyle Wilson, and Kenrick Ellis walk. Cut Chris Johnson and Jeff Cumberland. Try to resign Bilal Powell and Jaiquan Jarrett, and stick a tender on Damon Harrison before resigning him. After these moves, even if you hold on to Percy Harvin, the Jets could still have about 39 million in cap room for the off-season.
Next don't be John Idzik, but don't be Mike Tannenbaum in free agency. Don't be Idzik in that you don't fill extreme areas of need, but don't go out and sign veterans to big deals to try and win now. Go out and throw Ryan Mallett an offer at quarterback. The guy has some potential and could come in and compete with Geno Smith. If Chan Gailey is the offensive coordinator, why not CJ Spiller at running back. Throw him an offer. How about Niles Paul at tight end? He is young and flashed some skills in Washington. He could be an upgrade over Cumberland. The big offer if you are to make one should be to guys like Orlando Franklin, Kareem Jackson, or Devin McCourty. Don't neglect the outside linebacker spot like the Jets have done for years. It's like Bradway had a vendetta out for OLB's.
The draft is your speciality, that is why you were hired. We have the sixth pick, so we should have our pick of the litter. This team has so many needs, so please don't be afraid to go BPA. Whether it be Marcus Mariota, Amari Cooper, DeVante Parker, Brandon Scherff, La'El Collins, or one of the edge-rushers, I won't be angry with you. Also don't be afraid to pull the trigger on moving down. Stock-piling draft picks could be a good idea for this team, especially if Mariota is around and the Eagles are willing to trade the farm.
So Mike, no pressure, but this is a crucial offseason. I promise I will give you more time than Woody gave Idzik, if you promise to not act like him. I look forward to seeing how you plan to build this roster up and what you do over the course of the offseason.
