It never really made any sense for the Jets to trade for any of these guys. Matt Stafford was never getting dealt. Colin Kapernick just got benched by the 49ers and is a terrible guy in the locker room. Cutler has a ridiculous contract and has never really gotten along with Brandon Marshall. The jury is still out on Mike Glennon, but why give up a draft pick for someone who is not a real upgrade. Mike Maccagan was never going to panic and trade for one of these quarterbacks.
Who is going to start this week for the Jets at quarterback? That is still up in the air, with Fitzpatrick doubtful with his torn ligament in his thumb, and Geno Smith questionable with a shoulder injury. That leaves rookie Bryce Petty out of Baylor, who showed promise in the preseason but is probably not ready for the bright lights. In the end, I believe that Geno will start this week and the next few for the Jets. I know there are those who will never say a positive thing about Geno Smith, but he actually seemed to have a good grasp of the offense on Sunday. He made a couple bad plays, his interception, and his inability to throw the ball away when under pressure. However, Geno made some great throws. The 25 year old finished the day 27/42, 265 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interceptions, and 34 rushing yards. This stat line was good for a quarterback rating of 87.9. There is a reason the Jets were confident with Geno as the starter before he got punched in the face. He is a great fit in Chan Gailey's offense and he has a ton of physical talent. Geno has great off the field chemistry with Brandon Marshall, and should make Devin Smith better with his arm strength.
The Jets upcoming schedule is nothing special. They face Jacksonville, Buffalo, Houston, Miami, and the Giants over the next five weeks. None of these teams have great defenses. I believe that if the offense is healthy around Geno Smith (Mangold, Devin Smith, Marshall), he can succeed and lead the Jets on the quest to a wild-card. Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make, and today I think was an example.
