On our Twitter account (@nothinbutjets), we asked fans who they think would be the captains of the Jets if the team named some. Rex has not named captains since 2011, but I thought it would be interesting to see who fans think would deserve it most. One name that showed up in one half of the submissions was Muhammad Wilkerson, who received the most votes of any Jets player by far. Other players who received votes were Willie Colon, Dawan Landry, Nick Mangold, Nick Bellore, Jeremy Kerley, Nick Folk, Stephen Hill (yes you read that right), Geno Smith, and Dee Milliner. I was surprised a veteran player like Nick Mangold or David Harris did not receive the most votes. Muhammad Wilkerson is still very young at 24 years of age and is only going into his fourth season in the NFL. With that in mind, is Muhammad Wilkerson the biggest leader on the Jets going into 2014?
Muhammad has done everything right for the Jets on the field, not missing a game in three seasons, while recording 181 total tackles, 18.5 sacks, an interception, and 6 forced fumbles. Wilkerson has yet to make a Pro Bowl, but was named to the All-Pro team in 2013. Hopefully for the Jets, Wilkerson steps up and takes a bigger leadership role in 2014.
