Let's start with the signal-caller, Ryan Fitzpatrick. After being slating to be the backup this season, Fitzpatrick has stepped in and played very well as the starter. He now has 13 touchdowns and 7 interceptions midway through the year. However, he now has a torn ligament in his left thumb. It forced him out of the Oakland loss. He played against the Jaguars and played very well. It is his non-throwing hand, but he will need surgery (probably on Friday). This gives him eight days to rest before the Jets take on Houston. Will he be ready? The Jets do not need a quarterback change right now. They need Fitzpatrick on the field.
What about the rest of the offense? Right now on the injury report, Eric Decker is listed with a knee injury, Chris Ivory is listed with a hamstring injury, Willie Colon is listed with a knee injury, Nick Mangold is listed with a neck injury, Bilal Powell is listed with an ankle injury, and Brandon Marshall is listed with a toe/ankle injury. Most of these guys are going to play Thursday, but Colon and Mangold are seriously questionable. Having Nick Mangold healthy is huge for the Jets. He is the best offensive lineman they have, and a major leader on the field. Wesley Johnson has not been horrible filling in, but he is not good enough. The Bills have a feared pass-rush and having Colon and Mangold on the field would help.
The defense is almost as banged up. The secondary is the main unit being affected. Calvin Pryor, the Jets starting safety, has missed the last couple of games and is 50/50 for Thursday. The defense has 100% been worse without him on the field. Pryor's backup, Dion Bailey, hurt himself on Sunday and looks like he will be out for the long run. The Jets are desperate for Calvin Pryor's return.
The big news today was that Nick Folk is out at least four weeks with his quad injury. It does make sense for the Jets to keep two kickers on the roster and wait for Folk to come back. They should place him on the IR and sign a kicker. It will most likely be a guy like Randy Bullock or Billy Cundiff. Folk has been so good over the past few seasons, and one of these free agents would be a serious downgrade.
The Jets have the potential to win a ton of games this year, but it won't happen if players keep dropping like flies. Let's hope that the team can get healthy over the long week after the Bills game.
