The Jets were able to lock up pretty much every key free agent of their own this offseason. David Harris, Bilal Powell, and others were brought back. The Jets had so much cap room, and were able to make these moves while also improving the rest of the roster. While most people would think the Jets are in cap hell entering next offseason due to the insane amount of money they spent this offseason, it is quite the opposite. If the Jets cut D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Breno Giacomini, and Antonio Cromartie, the team would have over $40 million to spend going into free agency in 2016. I think there is a chance they could use the franchise tag on Muhammad Wilkerson if they are not able to lock him up in the next couple of months. No other pending free agents are worth the tag.
Starting with the members of the 2012 draft class, who make up the majority of the pending free agents. Antonio Allen is an interesting case. After the 2013 season, you would think he had a long future ahead with the Jets starting at safety. However due to cornerback injuries, he was forced to move to a new position. He struggled and did not see adequate playing time this past season. Now the team has made a ton of moves in the secondary, and Allen is no longer being considered a starter. I would hold off before resigning Allen. Quinton Coples has yet to develop into a consistent pass-rusher off the edge, but I am expecting a big year from the former first rounder. Coples is going to be starting at outside linebacker for the Jets this season, and I think there is a good chance he is back. The last member of the 2012 draft class is Demario Davis. Davis had been a main stay in the middle of the Jets defense for the past couple of seasons. The inside linebacker isn't a star, but he is a solid player. I would like to see him resigned.
Ryan FItzpatrick and Bilal Powell are in similar spots, where it is really up in the air whether they will be back. Fitzpatrick will compete with Geno Smith for the quarterback job this season, and I expect Geno to win. I think Geno has a good season with the improved weapons and Chan Gailey. If this happens, there is a solid chance he is brought back on a very cheap deal. Powell will probably end up being third on the depth chart, behind Ivory and an early round running back. Chris Ivory coming back will depend on which running back the Jets pick in the draft. If the Jets take a running back like Ajayi or Duke Johnson early and they are really good as rookies, Ivory could be a goner. I would like to see him back, but he isn't the ideal running back for Gailey's offense.
Damon Harrison was tendered this past offseason as a restricted free agent, meaning he will be an unrestricted free agent next offseason. Harrison is young and one of the best run-stuffing defensive tackles in football. I would hate to lose him.
The biggest name of the free agents is Muhammad Wilkerson. The stud defensive lineman has been the subject of a lot of talk this offseason. Many would like to see him soon. I think he is going to get a ton of money, probably something like $12 million per. I don't think Mike Maccagnan will let a talented young home-grown player like Wilkerson hit free agency.
